1992 Victim of Benjamin Atkins Identified Through Forensic Genetic Genealogy

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA / ACCESSWIRE / January 29, 2024 / Identifinders International is pleased to have assisted the Highland Park Police Department with the identification of serial killer Benjamin "Tony" Atkins’ last unidentified victim.

Atkins, known as the Woodward Corridor Killer, was responsible for the murder of at least 11 women in Highland Park and Detroit, Michigan over a period of eight months between December 1991 and August 1992. Atkins died in 1997 from medical complications due to AIDS.

Because of the lack of physical evidence that could link him to any of the murders, Atkins was convicted of rape and homicide in 1994 and sentenced to several terms of life in prison based largely on his own detailed confession and the identification of 10 of his victims. As of 2023, the Highland Park Police Department worked with Identifinders to use forensic genetic genealogy to identify the remaining unidentified victim, a woman found in the Monterery Motel in Highland Park. The victim’s name is being withheld at the request of her family.

We would like to thank Gray Hughes Investigates for his generous funding of this case, and his dedication to restoring the names of the unidentified.

We would also like to thank former Identifinders Forensic Genetic Genealogist Linda Doyle with generating the lead to this woman’s identity.
