KROBO DISTRICT: The Krobo District office under the Tema Regional Office of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has successfully installed approximately 35,000 prepaid meters across the district since the initiation of the postpaid meter replacement project in 2022. Mr. Christopher Apawu, an engineer and the ECG Krobo District Manager, shared this development at a public education forum focusing on the company’s operations and services.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Apawu revealed that the installation of prepaid meters is being executed in phases, moving systematically from one community to another. He emphasized that this is not a one-time project but an ongoing initiative. Mr. Apawu was joined by Mr. Maxwel Narh, the Krobo District Customer Management Officer, and Ms. Sakyiwaa Mensah, the ECG Tema Regional PRO, during the event.
Addressing public concerns about the prepaid meter installation being endorsed by certain individuals, Mr. Apawu clarified that the project is not for anyone’s personal
benefit. It is part of a national initiative that began in 2000, aimed at ensuring all ECG customers across its operational areas transition to prepaid meters. The goal of this national project remains active.
Mr. Apawu highlighted the necessity of reliable internet service for the proper functioning of prepaid meters, explaining that ECG collaborates with telecommunication companies and other organizations to provide efficient services. “For a prepaid meter to be installed and function optimally, good internet service is essential in that area. Hence, we follow the telecom companies closely where our prepaid meter installations are concerned,” he stated.
The forum also served as a platform for educating the public on the steps for acquiring meters and utilizing ECG’s cashless services, urging customers to stay vigilant against fraud. Mr. Apawu reminded the public that ECG does not have any mobile money numbers for payments, and any such requests should be treated as fraudulent.
Furthermore, he advised the
public on the importance of using Energy Commission-certified electricians and the risks associated with substandard wiring materials. He reiterated that ECG is legally prohibited from supplying power to structures lacking certified wiring certificates, urging customers to adhere to legal requirements.
