ADDIS ABABA: The 4th Ethiopia-EU Joint Working Group meeting on migration was conducted today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Addis Ababa. In his opening remarks, State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Mesganu Arga, emphasized Ethiopia’s dedication to engaging productively with the European Union, which he identified as a key strategic partner.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, the State Minister highlighted that migration is a sensitive political issue for Ethiopia, a nation that serves as a source, transit, and destination for migrants. He noted the government’s ongoing efforts to address the fundamental causes of migration, with a particular focus on tackling challenges such as human trafficking.
Ambassador Mesganu also highlighted Ethiopia’s active role in bilateral and multilateral initiatives to manage migration. He pointed out the country’s collaborative efforts with neighboring nations and international partners to confront the challenges associated with migration. During the meeting,
Ambassador Mesganu acknowledged the strengthened cooperation between Ethiopia and the EU in implementing the Readmission Procedure.
Furthermore, the State Minister highlighted Ethiopia’s demonstrated political and operational commitment and urged the EU to reconsider its approach of imposing punitive measures. In this context, he called on the EU to take tangible steps toward lifting the visa restrictions imposed on Ethiopians.
