Ouagadougou: The Minister of Humanitarian Action, Nandy Somé/Diallo, accompanied by the resident coordinator of the United Nations system in Burkina Faso, Carol Flore, welcomed on Friday the commitment of humanitarian actors to protect and save lives.
World Humanitarian Day 2024 was held under the theme ‘Acting for Humanity’.
For the occasion, Madam Minister of Humanitarian Action, Nandy Somé/Diallo, accompanied by the resident coordinator of the United Nations system, stayed on Friday August 16, 2024 in the city of Naaba Kango. The objective was to interact with all the actors involved in the humanitarian field.

During the ceremony, a nod was made to all humanitarian actors through a guided tour of the stands.
According to the resident coordinator of the United Nations system in Burkina, Carol Flore, ‘In a combined action, supported by joint planning and effective coordination with the government, humanitarian partners were able to assist more than 2.9 million people in 2023 in different regions of the country and in several sectors. During the first three months of this year, more than 700,000 Burkinabè people were assisted by humanitarian actors. The humanitarian response helps save lives and alleviate immediate, medium and long-term suffering. We need to invest more in concrete actions that strengthen and shape resilience within families and communities. »
To respond to
the needs of the moment, Mrs. Carol Flore invited all humanitarian actors and the authorities to further strengthen the mechanisms which make it possible to give vulnerable people assisted the capacity to produce their own means of subsistence in order to build their own livelihoods. own future.
Speaking on behalf of national NGOs, Ms. Gladys Sawadogo/Ouédraogo first welcomed the efforts made by the Burkinabè government and all humanitarian actors to respond to current emergencies.
‘The humanitarian situation that Burkina Faso is going through requires us to work in a synergy of actions and pooling of resources to achieve an effective and efficient response needed by the community affected by the humanitarian crisis. We need to strengthen the capacities of national actors, NGOs and government technical services in order to enable real ownership of prevention and response mechanisms to humanitarian crises,’ underlined Ms. Sawadogo.
As a reminder, World Humanitarian Day was created in 2008 by the United Nati
ons General Assembly. This commemoration takes place on August 19 each year to pay tribute to the victims of the attack against the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, which occurred on August 19, 2003, which left 22 dead, including the special representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello.
