EASF Director Says Ethiopia’s Preparedness to Enhance Standby Force Shows Commitment to Peace


Addis Ababa: Ethiopia’s preparations to build a modern army and weaponry that enhance the Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF), demonstrates the country’s commitment to playing a leading role to ensure peace and stability in the region, EASF Director Brigadier General Paul Kahuria Njema observed.

The above remark was made by the director during a visit to the Motorized Battalion military base set up by Ethiopia for EASF.

Recall that the regional organization of 10 African countries, including Ethiopia, was established in 2004 with the goal of enhancing peace and stability in the region.

A delegation from EASF has visited the Motorized Battalion military base set up by Ethiopia for EASF.

The delegation has given confirmation to the battalion as it is in a very good position that meets continental and international standards in terms of military personnel and weapons.

Ethiopia’s preparation demonstrates the country’s commitment to peace and stability in the region, Brigadier General Njema said.

He furthe
r noted that the readiness assessment team will visit other member countries to make observations, and highlighted Ethiopia’s symbolic experience in this regard.

The other EASF members, a regional organization established in 2004, with the goal of enhancing peace and stability in the region are Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Kenya, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, Sudan, and Uganda.

Brigadier General Getachew Ali, Commander of the Eastern Africa Standby Force, said that the evaluation criteria of the team are in line with international and African Union standards.

He added that Ethiopia has deployed modern motorized battalion for the force as per the agreement made by all member countries to contribute their part in the form of human resources and logistics.
