Addis Ababa: Ethiopia is taking significant strides toward sustainable water management as the Ministry of Water and Energy revealed plans to conduct comprehensive studies on the equitable use of transboundary groundwater resources.
The initiative comes in response to the country’s growing population and the increasing demand for water due to urbanization and climate change.
State Minister of Water and Energy, Abraha Adugna, emphasized the importance of effective leadership and management of water resources to ensure their sustainable use.
He highlighted that Ethiopia is blessed with abundant underground and surface water resources, which must be properly identified and protected for future generations.
Recognizing the pressures on surface water supplies, the Ministry aims to explore groundwater alternatives, particularly in regions that experience frequent water shortages, the state minister pointed out.
Moreover, the recent release of a topography map has underscored the significance of transboundary g
roundwater resources, prompting the Ministry to initiate detailed studies to assess these vital water sources, he stated.
Abraha expressed optimism about the potential of underground water to meet the diverse needs of communities across the country.
He reaffirmed that by collaborating with neighboring countries, Ethiopia will work to ensure fair and equitable access to these shared resources, fostering regional cooperation and sustainability.
This proactive approach not only addresses immediate water needs but also lays the groundwork for long-term water security in Ethiopia, marking a positive step towards a more sustainable future, it was learned.
