Addis Ababa: Ethiopia and Algeria share a united vision for Africa, committing themselves to fostering peace, stability, and development across the continent, Algeria’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union Selma Malika Haddadi said.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, Selma Malika Haddadi highlighted the enduring partnership between Ethiopia and Algeria in an exclusive interview. This partnership, which dates back to the early 1960s, was founded on their shared role in the establishment of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU). Founding fathers of both nations were motivated by Pan-Africanism, advocating for the political and economic emancipation of Africa from colonialism while promoting regional integration and development.
Haddadi emphasized that this vision has stood the test of time and continues to shape their cooperation within the African Union. Both countries remain committed to a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Africa, where every nation has the opportunity to thrive, she added.
According to her, Ethiopia and Algeria were dedicated to the AU’s strategic goals, with strengthened ties over the years, particularly in light of global and regional challenges. The ambassador underlined the importance of peaceful solutions, dialogue, and mediation to resolve political instability and conflicts on the continent.
Both Algeria and Ethiopia strongly believe that sustainable development is the driving force for peace and stability, she noted, adding that sustainable development provides growth opportunities, particularly for Africa’s youth. Through advancing dialogue and collaboration, the two countries not only strengthen their bilateral ties but also work with other African nations to ensure that Africa’s voice is heard on the global stage.
As active members of the AU, Ethiopia and Algeria are promoting the integration of peace, security, and development as key pillars for Africa’s success, she stated. Noting the roles of leadership both nations play internationally, she recalled Algeria’s rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for January 2025 as a non-permanent member of the council. These efforts contribute to enhancing Africa’s presence in global affairs and aligning with the goals of Agenda 2063, the blueprint for Africa’s future.
She concluded that the Algeria-Ethiopia partnership reflects Africa’s commitment to overcoming challenges and securing a prosperous, peaceful future for generations to come.
