Ethiopian Foreign Minister Visits Djibouti to Strengthen Bilateral Ties and Boost Trade


DJIBOUTI CITY: Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos, accompanied by his delegation, conducted a site visit to the Dorale Multipurpose Port and Terminal in Djibouti. The visit underscored Ethiopia’s commitment to bolstering economic and logistical ties through firsthand observation of port operations, including income and expenditure management processes.



According to Ethiopian News Agency, Minister Gedion’s visit also included a courtesy call on President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti. The discussions focused on reinforcing the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Ethiopia and Djibouti. Both sides exchanged views on key bilateral and continental issues, emphasizing joint efforts to address focus areas highlighted during the recently held 17th Ethio-Djibouti Joint Ministerial Commission meeting.



The Ethiopian Foreign Minister also engaged in talks with Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Djibouti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Gedion emphasized the exemplary nature of the longstanding ties between the two nations in fostering regional cooperation. He reiterated Ethiopia’s commitment to maintaining regional peace and stability and its determination to combat Al-Shabaab.



The Ethiopian delegation further discussed initiatives to enhance Djibouti’s port services, expand fuel terminal capacity, complete the construction of the Dikhil-Galafi road, and improve the efficiency of cargo transportation and import-export processes. These discussions are seen as critical to strengthening the economic infrastructure linking the two countries.
