ADDIS ABABA: Ethiopia’s initiatives in space science and geospatial technology are playing a pivotal role in driving the nation’s economic growth, according to Minister of Innovation and Technology, Belete Molla. The Minister highlighted these endeavors during a visit to the Space Science and Geospatial Institute and the Entoto Observatory Center, emphasizing the country’s leadership in space exploration within the Horn of Africa.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, Ethiopia has established a notable presence in space science by constructing an astronomical observatory and establishing a comprehensive national space agency. These efforts are integral to advancing development across various sectors, including agriculture, industry, and health. Minister Belete stressed the necessity of harnessing Ethiopia’s technological capabilities to manage and utilize resources both on Earth and in space.
Minister Belete noted the sector’s wide-ranging scope, encompassing activities from terrestrial to space applications,
and urged collaborative efforts among institutions to maximize the anticipated benefits for Ethiopia. He underscored the significant contributions of national initiatives in space science and geospatial fields to the country’s economic growth.
The Minister highlighted the positive impacts being realized through centers focused on crop monitoring, geodetic infrastructure services, urban development monitoring, water monitoring, rural information monitoring, disaster monitoring, and digital mapping services. These centers are enhancing the efficiency of national development activities across various sectors.
Additionally, Belete emphasized the importance of building strong relationships with universities and secondary schools to inspire and educate the next generation of Ethiopians in space science and geospatial disciplines. Director General of the Space Science and Geospatial Institute, Abdisa Yilma, affirmed the successful implementation of the country’s plans in these fields.
