Addis Ababa: The Ethiopian government has been exerting tremendous efforts to ensure the country’s food self-sufficiency, Food and Agriculture Organization commended.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, in an exclusive interview with ENA, FAO Representative in Ethiopia Farayi Zimudzi stated that many African countries are drawing inspiration from Ethiopia’s tangible progress in the agricultural sector. Zimudzi praised the government’s continuous dedication to ensuring its food sovereignty, reiterating the organization’s support to such efforts.
“Ethiopia’s advancements in agriculture should be model across Africa to achieve food security,” she emphasized, adding, “These efforts are crucial and truly commendable.”
Zimudzi also recalled FAO’s recognition of Ethiopia’s achievements, citing the Agricola Medal awarded to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in Rome, January 2024 for the recognition of his leadership in improving food security and striving for wheat self-sufficiency.
She reaffirmed the FAO’s commitment to continuing collaboration with Ethiopia in both technical and financial support to enhance agricultural investments. “These efforts are commendable, and it is essential that we continue to support and collaborate to make food self-sufficiency a reality for every Ethiopian, particularly in wheat production,” Zimudzi remarked.
In addition to boosting production, she underscored the importance of improving market access and storage to ensure that food reaches consumers efficiently.
