Addis Ababa: South Africa, which holds the presidency of G20, will place the agenda of Africa’s development at the forefront, International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola told ENA. The country assumed G20 presidency from December 2024 through to November 2025.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, the minister stated that G20 is a great platform and serves as a bridge between the global north and the global south. As the president of G20 for this year, South Africa will prioritize Africa’s development, financing for climate change, and other important developments.
South Africa’s leadership will focus on achieving equilibrium and equality in the global economy and sustainable development, the minister added. This includes addressing issues related to the transformation of the financial architecture and ensuring equality in the global economy to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2063, as well as the Pact of the Future adopted at the United Nations.
The G20 is an intergovernmental economic forum comprising several wealthy countries and regional unions, including the African Union, which recently joined the group. The G20 represents 85% of the global economy, 75% of world trade, and 67% of the world’s population. South Africa’s presidency offers a unique opportunity to shape global policies and advocate for Africa’s interests.
