Greece Celebrates Epiphany with Traditional Festivities

Athens: Epiphany, a notable religious festival commemorating the baptism of Jesus Christ by John the Baptist in the River Jordan, was recently celebrated in Greece. Known locally as the Celebration of the Lights or “ta fota,” this event marks an important day in the Greek Orthodox calendar and is observed on January 6th.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the festival is one of the holiest feast days in Greece. On the eve of Epiphany, Greek children engage in a traditional practice of singing special holiday songs that symbolize the baptism of Jesus. This tradition not only serves as a cultural hallmark but also involves the community, as spectators often express their appreciation by giving coins to the young singers.
