Addis Ababa: The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, emphasized that Ethiopia’s macroeconomic reforms are poised to bring significant transformation to the country.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, Georgieva made these remarks during a press conference in Addis Ababa after concluding her two-day visit to Ethiopia. She highlighted the necessity for societal unity in backing the government’s economic reforms, expressing confidence in the transformative potential of Ethiopia’s macroeconomic agenda.
Georgieva stressed the importance of collective support for the economic initiatives spearheaded by the government. She also reaffirmed the IMF’s commitment to continuously support Ethiopia in ensuring the success of its economic reform efforts.
This visit marked Georgieva’s return to Ethiopia since her last visit in 2018. During her stay, she visited several social and development sites, including The Adwa Memorial Museum. She expressed admiration for the transformation witnessed in Addis Ababa, stating, “You (Ethiopians) make Africa proud.”
In addition to her site visits, Georgieva met with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and other senior government officials. Prime Minister Abiy expressed gratitude for the IMF’s sustained technical and financial backing of Ethiopia’s economic reform program and acknowledged Georgieva’s personal contributions.
Ethiopia’s macroeconomic reform program, which benefits from one of the IMF’s largest financing arrangements, is anchored in a Home-Grown Vision and Reform Agenda. This agenda outlines the country’s growth and development objectives.
