Addis Ababa: IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva is currently in Addis Ababa for a two-day official visit to Ethiopia. As part of her itinerary, Georgieva visited the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum and met with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, as well as other high-ranking government officials.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, Prime Minister Abiy commended the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for its ongoing technical and financial support for Ethiopia’s economic reform program. He expressed appreciation for Georgieva’s personal contributions to these efforts. Ethiopia’s macroeconomic reform program, supported by one of the IMF’s largest financing packages, is based on a Home-Grown Vision and Reform Agenda that outlines the nation’s growth and development objectives. Abiy highlighted the strong ownership of these reforms by his administration, which has allowed for the implementation of significant measures to address longstanding macroeconomic challenges.
Prime Minister Abiy noted that the results of the program to date are positive and encouraging. He emphasized that continued implementation will promote macroeconomic stability, stimulate growth, improve living standards, and help position Ethiopia as a beacon of prosperity in Africa. Joining Georgieva at the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum were key government figures, including Finance Minister Ahmed Shide, Planning and Development Minister Fitsum Assefa, and National Bank Governor Mamo Mihretu, along with other IMF staff members.
The Adwa Victory Memorial serves as a tribute to the heroes and heroines who sacrificed in the struggle for Ethiopia’s freedom and dignity. The memorial’s design honors and celebrates the legacy of those who fought in the Battle of Adwa through immersive exhibits, poignant artifacts, and evocative displays, offering visitors a glimpse into the historical significance of the battle.
Earlier, Georgieva also visited the ‘Lenegewa’ Women’s Rehabilitation and Skill Development Center in Addis Ababa, underscoring the IMF’s commitment to supporting Ethiopia’s economic development. Her visit aims to foster dialogue on policies that promote resilience, shared prosperity, and long-term growth for the country.
