Including Africa in Security Council Among Best Responses for Historical Injustice: UNGA President

Addis Ababa: Including Africa in the Security Council would be one of the best responses for the continent’s historical injustice, UN General Assembly (UNGA) President Philemon Yang told ENA. The former Prime Minister of Cameroon noted that Africa has been poorly represented in the Security Council.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, African leaders who have gathered in Addis Ababa for the 38th African Summit are pressing for reparations for historical injustices. As part of the reparative justice for Africans, the African Union (AU) is advocating for permanent seats and veto power on the UN Security Council. The member countries of the union are also arguing that their significant role in global peace efforts demands greater representation.

“I think the response of the international community is one of the best for the moment. Recently, the pact for the future was adopted,” the UN General Assembly (UNGA) president said. The pact for the future states that in the United Nations Security Council, Africa has been poorly represented, Yang stated, adding, “I think the international committee agreed on this, and we are working on that issue.”

Speaking about Ethiopia, the president noted that “Ethiopia is one of the nations which believes in the Charter of the United Nations. So our relationship, the relationship of the United Nations General Assembly and Ethiopia is great and will keep getting greater.”
