Increasing Revenues from Coffee Production Should Be Accorded Emphasis , Says Standing Committee


Addis Ababa: Special emphasis should be accorded to increasing the economic benefits from coffee production, according to Agriculture Affairs Standing Committee at the House of Peoples’ Representatives.

During performance review of the concluded 2016 and appraisal for 2017 EFY held today in Adama city, Chairman of the Standing Committee Solomon Lale stated that promising results have been registered in producing quality coffee and export of specialty coffee to the world market.

Although encouraging results have been registered in promoting quality coffee production for export, given the potentials that the country possesses, there remains more efforts for enhancing coffee productivity, he added.

The Chairman also underscored the need for replicating success attained by model coffee farmers into wider farming community in the country.

He further noted that farmers should be provided with best practices and support from experts to improve quality coffee production.

Speaking on the occasion, Adugna Debela,
Executive Director of Coffee and Tea Authority noted that improvements have been made in securing more foreign earnings by producing quality coffee.

He added that older coffee trees planted on more than 500 thousand hectares land were pruned.

Apart from coffee production, a strategy has been put in place to further develop the production of tea and a variety of spices, he added.
