ADDIS ABABA: The Ethiopian Investment Commission convened a consultative meeting with the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the Chinese Embassy to explore strategies for increasing Chinese investments in Ethiopia. The meeting, attended by Ethiopian Investment Commission Commissioner Zeleke Temesgen and Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia Chen Hai, focused on improving the business environment and attracting more foreign investment from China.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, China is currently the leading source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Ethiopia, with over 3,300 active projects mainly in the manufacturing and construction sectors. These projects have generated more than 325,470 jobs, highlighting the significant role of Chinese investment in the Ethiopian economy. In the last five years, Chinese investors have been responsible for over 50 percent of new investment projects in the country, demonstrating the strong economic ties between the two nations.
Ethiopia and China have established a strategic partnership, underscoring their robust bilateral relations. The consultative meeting is expected to pave the way for a broader Public-Private Dialogue that the Ethiopian government plans to conduct. This dialogue aims to optimize the contributions of existing foreign investments to Ethiopia’s economic growth and create a more streamlined and favorable investment climate.
