More Than 167,900 New Customers Gain Electricity Access, Reports Ethiopian Electric Utility


ADDIS ABABA: The Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) announced that it has successfully provided electricity to over 167,900 new customers within the first five months of the Ethiopian fiscal year, reflecting its commitment to expanding access and maintaining quality service across the nation.



According to Ethiopian News Agency, the EEU emphasized its focus on supplying reliable and equitable electric power to its users. Melaku Taye, the Communication Executive Officer at EEU, highlighted that the company is prioritizing the delivery of consistent power and ensuring fair distribution to meet the growing demands of its customers.



In recent months, 42 new rural kebeles and towns have been connected to the electricity grid, marking significant progress in extending power access. The utility aims to add a total of 600,000 new customers by the end of the fiscal year, with 167,952 already connected in the past five months. This marks an increase of 35,890 users compared to the same period in the previous Ethiopian fiscal year.



The EEU is also focusing on expanding its reach to remote areas through investment in solar power. The construction of solar power plants in 25 locations over the last five months has brought electricity to 74,222 people, as stated by Melaku Taye. These initiatives have increased the total number of EEU customers to more than 4.941 million, underscoring the utility’s dedication to enhancing power accessibility throughout Ethiopia.
