He said the country had obtained good democratic credentials over the years and that was made possible by the contributions of all the political actors in the country.
Pe Ayikodie was speaking at the second inter-party dialogue committee meeting organized by the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) in Paga.
He called on political parties to be mindful of how they addressed their opponents during the campaign period and after the 2024 elections.
He said ‘in order to maintain the peace we are currently enjoying in this district, it is incumbent on the various political parties to ensure that their supporters do not do anything that would jeopardize the peace we are enjoying’.
Mr James Abdulai Ayaala, the Upper East Regional Director of the NCCE said
in the fourth Republic, the country had successfully conducted eight presidential and parliamentary elections and had also successfully handed over power from one party to another for three consecutive times.
He emphasized that ‘from 1992 to date, it has come to be accepted in Ghana that democracy is the best system of governance, and all well-meaning Ghanaians ought to keep building on this path’.
He asked the various political parties to be decorous in their campaigns and avoid anything that will destabilize the peace that took many years to build.
Speaking on monitoring and reporting threat vulnerabilities to violence extremism, the district police commander of the Kassena/Nankana west district ASP Ziaullah Khalil Ibrahim said it was the mandate of the security agencies to maintain law and order and ensure that the country’s borders were constantly watched, to stop the infiltration of terrorists and any form of extremists.
He therefore called on community leaders to collaborate with the various securit
y agencies to ensure that the borders were safe, adding that the security services could not achieve much without the support of the people. He indicated that the unemployment situation in the country made the youth vulnerable to being recruited by extremists
Mr Ziaullah said the 2024 Election was Crucial to Ghanaians and efforts must be made for a peaceful election.
‘Parties must be encouraged to dialogue and not to resort to violence, and also desist from taking entrenched Positions’ he stressed.
Mr Robert Dampare, the Kassena/Nankana west District Director of the NCCE indicated that the committee would roll out a number of activities geared towards maintaining the peace before, during and after the elections.
He said the activities would include community forums on peaceful elections, meetings with identifiable groups and radio sensitization on peaceful elections among others.
