Pope Francis Returns to Vatican After Extended Hospitalization for Severe Respiratory Illness

Rome: Pope Francis was discharged from Rome’s Gemelli hospital Sunday, five weeks after he was admitted for a case of bronchitis and later suffered other medical complications, including pneumonia in both lungs. The 88-year-old pope left the hospital shortly after noon, marking his first public appearance since February 14.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the pope, appearing weak but in good spirits, greeted hundreds of faithful from a hospital balcony before his departure. The crowd responded with chants of “Viva il papa!” and “Papa Francesco,” celebrating his recovery after the extended illness.

The Vatican reported that Pope Francis departed in his white Fiat 500L and visited the Basilica of Saint Mary Major to pray. He is expected to return to his residence at Casa Santa Marta, where he will convalesce for two months, continuing to receive treatment.

Pope Francis was initially admitted on February 14, 2025, for bronchitis and was diagnosed with a severe respiratory infection, the most serious health crisis of his papacy. He was also diagnosed with a “polymicrobial infection” and bilateral pneumonia during his stay.

Doctors revealed that Pope Francis experienced critical episodes during his hospitalization, at times requiring oxygen therapy and a non-invasive ventilator. In his twenties, part of his right lung was removed to treat an infection, and he was briefly hospitalized in 2023 for bronchitis.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, who led the medical team, indicated that a full recovery from the bilateral pneumonia would take time. The pope’s voice, affected by oxygen therapy, is expected to gradually improve.

Alfieri expressed optimism that Pope Francis could soon resume his work schedule, although his immediate participation in meetings may be limited.
