Special Envoy for Drought Relief urges international donors to respond to the droughts in Somalia

The special envoy of the President of the Federal Government of Somalia for Drought Relief, urged the international donors to respond urgently to the relief of the drought which is leading to famine in Somalia.

The conference on responding to the drought in the Horn of Africa was jointly organized by the governments of Italy, the United States, the United Kingdom, Qatar and the United Nations, with the participation of more than 30 countries, the Islamic Organization, the Arab League, the African Union, and organizations of United Nations, and International Aid.

The delegation thanked the governments that offered donations, especially the United States government that donated $150 million in advance.

The meeting was attended by the Head of USAID Ms. Samantha Power, Minister for International Development of the British Government Rt. Hon. Vicky Ford, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, E. Ms. Marina Sereni, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Abdiaziz Al-Khulayfi, Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations for humanitarian aid and emergency response, Martin Griffiths. The conference was coordinated by former British Foreign Minister David Miliban. The leaders of Oxform, ICRC, WFP, IOM, IRC also attended the meeting.
