The worsened condition of the Asampu-Wenchi roads, in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region has led to the death of five pregnant women and seven children, Mr James Kuirnaa, the Assembly member of the area has said.
He explained that in the cases involved the pregnant women were in labour and died on their way to the Wenchi Methodist Hospital for delivery, while the children were also sick and went through the same predicament due to the bad roads.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Kurinaa said the sad incidents happened between 2019 and 2024 saying because of its worsened condition commercial drivers had failed plying the stretch.
He said in cases of emergency pregnant women and sick people had to be transported to Wenchi by a tricycle because the nearest health facilities were situated at Nchiraa and Offuman, which were several kilometres away from the town and unmotorable.
Mr Kurinaa said he had officially informed the Wenchi Municipal Assembly, but nothing had been done on the
matter.
He said the community also needed a Community-based Health Planning Service (CHPS) compound urgently to address the health needs of the growing population in the area and appealed to Wenchi Municipal Assembly, corporate and religious bodies to come to their aid.
